Gay station will continue despite India court ruling

India’s only radio station for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community says it will continue despite a recent ruling by India’s Supreme Court that criminalises homosexuality.

The CEO of internet channel Q Radio told Asia Radio Today the station would get even more serious about building bridges with the community it serves.

“There is no reason to close the radio station as it violates no law and its efforts for now are to create a platform for the LGBT community and see if they will adopt it as their own,” said Anil Srivatsa, CEO and co-founder of Radiowalla Network, the group behind the station.

On December 11, the Supreme Court reinstated a 153-year-old law banning gay sex, which had been overturned in a landmark 2009 ruling.

“Listeners have been calling to discuss and share their experiences post the judgment. It is about the need to be heard and there is definitely anger, disappointment in their voices,” said Srivatsa.

The station has also witnessed an increase in calls from outside India.

Srivatsa called on the LGBT community to be part of the station: “Our efforts for now are to get the channel used by the LGBT community.  They have to step up to embrace this platform,” he said.
