iTunes Radio plans ‘standalone’ app against Pandora

Apple is reportedly testing iTunes Radio as a standalone app as part of the upcoming iOS 8.

International Business Times says the web-based music streaming service currently available in the US and Australia will be positioned in direct competition with Pandora.

Last year, Apple had launched iTunes Radio on iOS7, hoping to overtake Pandora’s share of the streaming market, but so far take-up has been less than expected.

The fact that iTunes Radio was just a part of the overall iTunes music app has been blamed on the disappointing response from Apple fans.

By making it a dedicated app which will come pre-installed on iOS 8 devices, Apple is hoping the platform will gain more prominence.

According to The Motley Fool, the new app may not bode well for Pandora as the streaming radio space has become very competitive and the company has seen take up rates fall in recent months.
