Frontier Silicon previews new digital radio chip

Kino 4, the next generation digital radio chip from Frontier Silicon was previewed at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair this week.

The company claims its Kino chip series is already the world’s best-selling digital radio IC, having sold over 20 million units.

The latest offering, Kino 4 integrates four previously separate chips, building on the performance and reliability standards of earlier versions, according to a release.

The chip is designed to power most categories of consumer digital radio devices like portable radios, radio receivers with Bluetooth connectivity, multi-function devices and the next generation of smart radios, which combine broadcast and IP return path functionality.

Said to deliver significant improvements in performance, cost and power consumption, Kino 4 will initially support the DAB family of standards.  But the chip has the capability to support other global standards, including HD Radio and Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM).

Anthony Sethill, CEO Frontier Silicon said: “Digital radio is making enormous advances around the world. As the market matures, it is critical that technology solutions continue to drive this progress.”
