Journalists slam station’s ‘pro-communist’ label

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) has criticised the country’s military for allegedly harassing the staff of Radyo ni Juan (RnJ) Tagum City 100.7 FM and branding the station as pro-communist, according to the Inquirer.

Jeffrey Tupas, NUJP Davao chapter secretary general, claimed that on March 28, a spokesperson of the Eastern Mindanao Command blasted the station as favouring the New People’s Army (NPA), when asked about evacuating a Manobo tribe in Talaingod town during military operations

Tupas said that RnJ reporters went through harassment for reporting on the evacuation in Talaingod.

He added that on April 8, RnJ reporters Jojo Gales and Erwin Batucan were held and interrogated by the Davao del Norte police when they went there to gather police blotter reports.

The military spokesperson has meanwhile denied branding the station as biased.
