Taiwan’s English station turns 35

International Community Radio Taipei (ICRT), Taiwan’s only English station turned 35 on Tuesday.

Born in 1979, ICRT came about when the United States broke diplomatic ties with China and sold its ‘Armed Forces Radio Network Taiwan’ to Taiwan’s Government Information Office for a dollar.

As part of its birthday celebrations, Morning Show DJ Terry Engel is driving from Taipei to Kaohsiung this weekend in a Ford Mustang, giving away gifts to listeners.

Listeners can also win a one-day Ford Mustang test drive by creating a song list for Terry as he hits the road.

Over the years, ICRT has run several different formats and now offers news throughout the day from 7 am to 8pm.

Aiming to reach a broader audience, the station now plans to launch a mobile app by the end of the year, according to the Taipei Times.
