RTHK Radio 3 airs bizarre music series

A new eight-part series featuring bizarre musical instruments through the ages began this weekend on Hong Kong’s RTHK Radio 3.

‘The Frankenhorn Collection’ is hosted by well-known presenter Phil Whelan.

RTHK describes the show as “the musical equivalent of bizarre creatures from the bottom of world’s oceans which often leave scientists perplexed”.

In the show, which airs Sunday mornings at 8.30, listeners will find out about, and listen to, some of the weirdest musical instruments ever conceived.

One of the strange instruments on the show is the Theremin, which is played by waving your hand in the air.

There’s also the ‘Cat Piano’, which was designed in the 1500s and stuck nails in various cat’s tails to cause the desired screech, but was never mass-produced.
