Australian music streaming service shuts

Australian music streaming app Songl has shut down after just 18 months of launch due to stiff competition, reports mUmBRELLA.

It is the second streaming service to shut shop in the country after Deezer in February, while Pandora and Spotify continue to dominate audience share.

Launched for the Australian market, Songl offered a premium offering for $12.99 per month as well as a free ad-funded version.

Existing subscribers and members would be moved to the new Omny app service, said Southern Cross Austereo (SCA), which initially offered Songl in a partnership with Sony Music and Universal Music.

In a statement, SCA said that stakeholders in Songl have moved their focus into other music and content-based commitments.

It will focus on of supplying linear music streams to Foxtel’s 32 music channels and Satellite Music Australia.

In a statement about the new Omny app, SCA said it is the “first truly personalised radio products that mixes premium broadcast content from radio personalities with the music the mobile user has access to, in a beautiful app environment”.

Speaking to mUmBRELLA, Guy Dobson, Chief Content Officer, SCA, said: “The new future of SCA has an increased focus on music, understanding the role it plays for consumers and brands alike.”
