Interview: RJ Ved, My FM, Nagpur, India

RJ Ved hosts the evening drive time show ‘Happy Evening’ on the Nagpur station of India’s 94’3 MY FM.

He is also particularly well-known for his voice-over work, mimicry and acting.

Speaking with Asia Radio Today, Ved talks about his journey as a radio presenter.

 1.  Tell us about how you got your first job in radio?

To be honest, I never thought of radio as a career option but it just happened. I’ve been a good speaker since my school days and used to host many shows and parties for pocket money during my college days. In 2010, I got a chance to host an on-ground activity for Radio Mirchi and the very next day I got a call from the Programming head of Radio Mirchi in Indore, Deepta Dixit who asked me to come down  for auditions. So I started my radio Journey with Radio Mirchi, and then in August 2012 I switched to 94.3 MY FM.

 2.  Explain what’s unique about MY FM Nagpur and how you fit in to the schedule?

MY FM Nagpur is unique because I’m on it! During the evening show from 5pm to 9 PM, when people are returning home from their routine I love to entertain them.

 3.  What do you do on your show to stand out from other drive shows?

Preparation is very important. An RJ needs to be up to date with his city and people as well as the happenings around the world. We have to present a picture of the day in a limited time and at the same time entertain listeners.

Energy is the second most important thing. Also god has gifted me many voices and the talent of mimicry. I can mimic many Bollywood and TV actors.

To engage listeners better, I always come up with unique contests.

 4.  Do you see yourself staying in Nagpur or do you yearn for a bigger city?

I believe progress has to be constant and everyone wants to progress from their present position. So let’s see what destiny has store in for me.

  5.  What one event or moment in your radio career stands out from all the others?

That one moment for me happened a few months after I started my career in radio. At a Radio Mirchi event, I was surrounded by a huge crowd demanding my autograph and pictures. Another moment was when I interviewed former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
