Radio Monsoon targets Indian fishermen

Scroll.in reports on a two-month-old Indian community radio station that gives regular updates about the annual monsoon season to the local fishing community.

Radio Monsoon, which airs near Thiruvananthpuram in the state of Kerala, offers the latest marine weather forecast, information not currently provided by other broadcast media in regional languages.

The need for the station was felt as mainstream weather broadcasts deal mostly with rain that affects agriculture. Marine weather data from government agencies’ marine is in English, which the fishermen don’t understand.

According to Scroll.in, Radio Monsoon broadcasts information assembled from the Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and the Indian Meteorological Department.

The station now wants to set up a weather data feedback system and is asking fishermen to report how accurate the forecasts and warnings are.
