S’pore 50th birthday: MediaCorp launches song contest

As Singapore prepares to mark its 50th birthday next year, MediaCorp has launched a contest to find an original song to commemorate the key moment in the country’s modern history.

‘The Gift of Song’ aims to find an memorable English song which will celebrate the distinct identity of Singaporeans and the republic itself.

The contest is open to Singaporeans and permanent residents and runs until October  19.

Three entries will be shortlisted by local musicians Dick Lee, Jeremy Monteiro and Sydney Tan, who have previously written songs used during National Day celebrations.

The winner will be chosen through public vote during January.

The winning song will lead celebrations for National Day on August 9th together with a cash prize of $7998 (S$10,000) for the writer.

The winning song will also be turned into a music video featuring Singaporeans from all walks of life, which will be released to the public.

MediaCorp deputy Chief Executive Officer Chang Long Jong said: “The celebratory song will celebrate who we are — our shared ideals, our achievements and how we embrace progress and change as a society.”
