Sri Lankan stations launch drought assistance.

Sri Lanka’s Captial Maharaja group radio stations – Shakthi FM, Sirasa FM, Yes FM and Y FM recently launched a drive to help drought victims in the country. Over two million Sri Lankans across 14 districts have been affected by a severe nine-month drought. The stations started a drought relief programme called the ‘Sirasa-Shakthi Sahana Yathra’ which journeyed to affected areas to provide relief. They invited listeners to contribute bottled water, dry rations like rice, canned fish, sugar and milk powder, which they could give at specified drop-off points. The response was overwhelming, says the company, with people making generous contributions in just three days. The first convoy of vehicles carried aid to Polonnaruwa, Ampara and Kilinochchi Districts.
