Exiled Myanmar station goes online only

Myanmar’s (Burma) oldest broadcaster-in-exile, Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) is switching from shortwave to online.

DVB first aired in 1992 from Oslo when the then exiled prime minister, Sein Win requested assistance from Norway to establish a station to reach Burma with information that the military regime would otherwise censor.

In 2005, DVB began broadcasting on TV but was often accused by the military junta of being biased towards Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy.

According to Aye Chan Nain, Executive Director of DVB Multimedia Group, it’s focusing more on new internet and mobile based content as fewer people listen to shortwave now.

DVB Deputy Executive Director Khin Maung Win said that there is a possibility that radio shows would be aired via other mediums and partnerships in Burma and the company will also apply for FM radio licenses.

The last episode of DVB radio be broadcast from its Chiang Mai station on Sunday from 6 am to 7 am.
